McDermott Station

McDermott Station is located at the intersection of Empire Grade, Ice Cream Grade and Felton-Empire Road. This station is designed to house three vehicles, and act as a disaster center for the Bonny Doon area. Empire Tile Works created a spectacular relief map of Bonny Doon for the front of the building.

McDermott Station is home to Engine 3211, Rescue 3261, and Water Tender 3251.

McDermott Station is new the headquarters for Bonny Doon Volunteer Fire/Rescue, Inc. and is where the monthly board meetings are held. The station has an office, a professional-style kitchen, a training/meeting room, showers, washer/dryer, and a fitness center for the firefighters. There are three apparatus bays. The main water tank provides 57,000 gallons of storage and serves the compound and the 80 psi hydrant. The station also has a fully automatic standby propane generator in case of power failure. The station has two phone lines, and Internet services are available for both wired and wireless devices. There is open wifi and a Verizon cell phone extender.

Access to the facility is limited to firefighters, board and auxiliary members. To take a tour, please contact the station manager.

The station is a multi-faceted building. A part of the interior space is utilized as a physical fitness training area. Other space is used for meetings, team training, equipment maintenance and storage, and apparatus parking. The large front paved area is ideal for apparatus cleaning and restocking as well as fire hose testing and training evolutions. There is even an interior “balcony” overlooking the apparatus bay for those important impromptu conversation sessions.

Primary construction efforts have been completed, with many thanks to Santa Cruz County taxpayers and our fabulous community donors. This really was a huge project, which required many, many people to pitch in time, money, and materials. Thanks to the support of community members and local businesses, we have a fully operational station on the eastern side of Bonny Doon, which serves as our new Headquarters. We could never have done this without your help and support. Thank you all!

Martin Station

Built in 1972 and dedicated to Frank A. Hellenthal who donated the property, Martin Station is the original Bonny Doon Fire Station. This station is often referred to as the "Old Firehouse" or locally as "Station 32" because it predates the newer McDermott Station. Martin Station serves as our launching point for emergency services in the western part of Bonny Doon.

Martin Station is home to our Type II Engine 3222 and reserve Type I Engine 3911.

The station has an office/day room, four apparatus bays, and a workshop. The main watertank provides ten thousand gallons. The station has a fully automatic standby generator in case of power outages, and serves as our fuel depot. The station has two phone lines, an Internet connection, a scanner, and both HAM and Public Safety radios. There is also open wifi and a Verizon cell extender.

Access to the facility is limited to firefighters, board and auxiliary members. To take a tour, please contact the station manager.

Martin Station is where we hold our fund-raisers. The old siren on the building that was used to call out the team in the days before radio-pagers now is used to announce the beginning of our fund-raisers in the spring and fall. If you hear it go off in the middle of the night, that means something BIG is up, and you should come and check in with us at the station.

We are very grateful that Martin Station is still standing. We came very close to losing it during the Martin Fire in 2008. You can still see the surrounding area in recovery after the fire.
